Can parrots eat peanuts?
Caution
Rarely — high fat, and a real aflatoxin risk.
- Food
- Peanuts
- Category
- Nut
- Verdict
- Only in small amounts
- Amount
- One unsalted nut as a training reward, no more than a few times a week. Never from a bulk bin.
- Safer swap
- Almonds
Why
Peanuts are around 50% fat by weight, which is far too rich for a parrot's liver. Poorly stored peanuts can also carry Aspergillus mould producing aflatoxin, a liver carcinogen.
What to watch for
Signs that the amount was too much:
- weight gain
- fatty liver
- lethargy
What to feed instead
If you were reaching for peanuts, almonds gives you the same job — a treat the bird will actually take — without the risk. Can parrots eat almonds?
How much is too much
One unsalted nut as a training reward, no more than a few times a week. Never from a bulk bin.
Treats and fruit should stay under roughly 20% of the daily bowl. The rest is pellets, leafy greens and a good chop.
