Can parrots eat coconut?
Caution
Caution — a high-fat treat, not a staple.

- Coconut
- Category
- Fruit
- Verdict
- Only in small amounts
- Amount
- A piece the size of a pea, no more than once a week.
- Safer swap
- Carrot
Why
Fresh coconut meat is not toxic, but it is roughly 65% fat, so even a small piece delivers a lot of calories. Sweetened shredded coconut and the flakes sold for baking usually carry added sugar and sulphites. Coconut oil has no place in a parrot's diet at all.
What to watch for
Signs that the amount was too much:
- weight gain
- loose droppings
- fatty liver
What to feed instead
If you were reaching for coconut, carrot gives you the same job — a treat the bird will actually take — without the risk. Can parrots eat carrot?
How much is too much
A piece the size of a pea, no more than once a week.
Treats and fruit should stay under roughly 20% of the daily bowl. The rest is pellets, leafy greens and a good chop.
