Can parrots eat chia seeds?
Caution
Only soaked — dry chia swells and can block the crop.

- Verdict
- Only in small amounts
- Amount
- Half a teaspoon soaked in water, once or twice a week.
- Safer swap
- Oats
Why
Chia absorbs many times its weight in water. Eaten dry it can swell inside the crop and cause an impaction; soaked first it is a useful source of omega-3. Never leave dry chia in the bowl.
What to watch for
Signs that the amount was too much:
- crop stasis
- regurgitation
- reduced droppings
What to feed instead
If you were reaching for chia seeds, oats gives you the same job — a treat the bird will actually take — without the risk. Can parrots eat oats?
How much is too much
Half a teaspoon soaked in water, once or twice a week.
Treats and fruit should stay under roughly 20% of the daily bowl. The rest is pellets, leafy greens and a good chop.
This page is reference material, not veterinary advice. Species, age and existing health conditions change what is safe. If you are unsure or your bird is already showing symptoms, contact an avian veterinarian.
