- Verdict
- Only in small amounts
- Amount
- A quarter of a nut, twice a week at most.
- Safer swap
- Almonds
Why
Pecans are not toxic, but their fat content is high enough that more than a fragment works against a parrot on a maintenance diet. Raw and unsalted only; never candied or roasted in oil.
What to watch for
Signs that the amount was too much:
- weight gain
- fatty liver
What to feed instead
If you were reaching for pecans, almonds gives you the same job — a treat the bird will actually take — without the risk. Can parrots eat almonds?
How much is too much
A quarter of a nut, twice a week at most.
Treats and fruit should stay under roughly 20% of the daily bowl. The rest is pellets, leafy greens and a good chop.
