Amount
Two or three kernels, no more than twice a week.

Why

Pistachios are not toxic, but they are high in fat and the salted snack version carries far too much sodium. Shells can splinter, and mouldy nuts can carry aflatoxin, so discard any that look discoloured.

What to watch for

Signs that the amount was too much:

  • weight gain
  • fatty liver

What to feed instead

If you were reaching for pistachios, almonds gives you the same job — a treat the bird will actually take — without the risk. Can parrots eat almonds?

How much is too much

Two or three kernels, no more than twice a week.

Treats and fruit should stay under roughly 20% of the daily bowl. The rest is pellets, leafy greens and a good chop.
